Two juveniles were detained Tuesday, Sept. 1, for allegedly making threats of violence against Chestnut Oaks Middle School, according to a news release from the Sumter sheriff's office Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 2.
At about 1:42 p.m. Tuesday, Sumter County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a threat against the school, according to Sumter County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Mark Bordeaux in the release. School officials placed the campus on lockdown while deputies responded to ensure the safety of students and faculty.
Investigators detained two juveniles thought to be the source of the threat, and they were transported to South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.
Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis said, “The safety of our children remains one of our highest priorities. We take every threat against our schools seriously. Parents, please talk with your children about the seriousness of making or sharing threats. Students, if you see or hear something concerning, say something - do not share it or spread it. Report it immediately to your school officials or school resource officer.”
The incident remains under investigation.
