15-year-old charged after 18-year-old injured in shooting

A 15-year-old is in custody after an 18-year-old was injured in a domestic-related shooting on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 14, according to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for Sumter Police Department.

Officers found the injured teenager on Ash Street, and he was flown to a Columbia hospital, where he was in stable condition on Thursday morning, according to a news release.

Based on information gathered, the 18-year-old was reportedly parked in front of a residence on Barwick Street when shots were fired into his vehicle, and he tried to drive away but crashed the vehicle and ran to Ash Street, where he was found by officers who were dispatched to the scene.

The 15-year-old reportedly ran from Barwick Street and was found by officers who took him into custody.

The 15-year-old was charged with attempted murder, possession of a handgun by a person under 18 and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. His name is not being released because of his age, and he is being held at at state Department of Juvenile Justice facility.

An investigation is ongoing by Sumter Police Department.
