Donna Washington's enchantingly spooky night captivates audience

It's rare that the words eerie and enchanting sit alongside each when describing an experience that kept you hooked on to every word, following the artist around every metaphorical turn of the story. An experience that brought you to the edge of your seat every time, your chills and curiosity eager to know the ending but longing for it to never come.

It's rare that such an experience can be frightening and delighting, creepy and witty, eerie and enchanting.

It's rare, until you've experienced the storytelling splendor of Donna Washington.

Her ability to weave in details that entice into dialogue that excites against a backdrop sure to give you a delightful fright was an experience worthy of the applause she was showered in.

As part of Sumter Opera House's Acoustic Cafe series, hosted in its City Centre at 25 N. Main St., the venue lowered its lights to heighten the senses of attendees for Washington's storytelling adventure.

An award-winning, internationally known master storyteller, artist-educator and author, Washington began her career right after graduating from Northwestern University. She has been featured at numerous festivals, schools, libraries, theaters and other venues around the world, including Canada, Peru, Ireland, Argentina and Hong Kong. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she presented more than 200 virtual shows and workshops.

During her time in South Carolina, she traveled to schools throughout Sumter and Lee counties, giving 720 students a "memorable moment with Mrs. Donna," according to City of Sumter Cultural Manager Seth Reimer.

The resounding applause that followed Washington's final bow only solidified the people's demand to have her and her storytelling gift back again.
