EUGENE SHAW

Eugene "Boogie" Shaw, affectionately known as "Boogie," husband of Mary Swinton Shaw, was born on Aug. 11, 1947, in Sumter, to the late Samuel Sonny Shaw and Pearl Solomon Shaw. He departed this earthly life on Monday, Feb. 5, 2024, at his residence.

At a young age, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was an active and faithful member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a member of the brotherhood, Sunday school and small group study, until his death. Eugene was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Lincoln High School with the Class of 1966. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. During this time, he held many positions, including machine gunnery, director of small arms, rifle marksmanship instructor, police academy instructor and proof of director for eight years. He served in Vietnam, Parish Island, Korea, and Okinawa, Japan. Eugene was employed with the City of Sumter for 30 years from Sept. 18, 1978 until Feb. 21, 2008.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Mary Swinton Shaw; his daughter, Courtney Shaw; son, Donnie Scarborough; five grandchildren, Megan Dyer-Bolden (Terry), Marcus (Jasmine) Dyer, Mandarin Dyer, Paryse Scarborough and Camarye Gooden; great-grandchildren, Breanna Bolden Dyer, Angel Shad, Adrionna Shad and Grayson Scarborough; one sister, Barbara A. Jonas; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitation at the home, 961 Rockdale Blvd., Sumter.

The procession will leave the home at 8:20 a.m.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. today in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. J. Elbert Williams officiating.

Burial will be at 11 a.m. in the Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia.
