The Lettermen coming to Sumter Opera House for 1 show only

The Lettermen, whose musical careers span more than five decades, will perform one night only at Sumter’s Opera House.

The trio made famous by classic hits “The Way You Look Tonight,” “Turn Around, Look at Me,” “Hang on Sloopy,” “Blue on Blue” and numerous others, will make a rare South Carolina appearance at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 14.

“We are excited to have them coming and apparently, we’re not alone,” Sumter Opera House Cultural Manager Seth Reimer stated in a news release. “Ticket sales have been steady since the announcement was first made. We still have some pretty good seats left, but I wouldn’t procrastinate too long!”

“We have a finite number of seats,” he said. “We’re not like some of the large, outside venues that can bring in extra bleachers. Once the tickets are all gone, that’s it. We won’t have any more.”

In the 1950s, The Lettermen began with Mike Barnett, Dick Stewart and Tony Butala, who is the only original member still with the trio.

Between 1962 and 1969, the group released 23 albums that included hits such as “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” “Put Your Head on My Shoulder,” “Up, Up and Away” and “Going Out of My Head.” They sang to sold-out crowds in venues across the U.S. and abroad including Thailand, Singapore, Japan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, France, Mexico and Saudi Arabia.

With more than 10,000 sold-out shows, The Lettermen appeal to audiences of allages, and their music stands the test of time.

Sumter Opera House Operations Manager Ellen Jansen echoed Reimer’s comments and praised local support in the release. “We’ve got a lot of people coming from out of town who will being staying in our motels, eating at our restaurants and taking in everything Sumter has to offer while they are here,” she said. “But it all starts with local community and business support. Without that, we couldn’t bring these names to our stage.”

The Lettermen have had two Top 10 singles, 16 Top 10 singles on the adult contemporary chart, 32 consecutive Billboard Magazine chart albums, 11 gold records and five Grammy nominations.

The group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Hit Parade Hall of Fame in 2012.
