Charles E. “Charlie” Mitchum, 86, died Sunday, April 21, 2024, at NHC Healthcare Sumter.
Born April 20, 1938, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Samuel Mitchum and the late Lucy Barkley Graham. He was self-employed as a skilled carpenter. Because of his expertise and quality work, he was responsible for numerous renovations in the historic district of downtown Sumter. After retiring in his late years, he restored antique furniture and boats. He loved fishing, restoring furniture, and more than anything, his family.
Survivors include his first wife, Delores Tobias; four children, Joseph “Jody” Mitchum (Tammie), Sharon Mitchum Poplin (Rocky), Lisa Mitchum Bellamy (Colin) and Charles Mitchum (Kim); three stepsons, Derek Hawkins (Wendy), Carl Hawkins Jr. (Crystal) and Timothy Hawkins (Heather); a sister, Sylvia Mitchum; a sister-in-law, Hazel Mitchum; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and his faithful dogs, Happy, Flash and Buddy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Chuck Mitchum; two brothers; two sisters; and his faithful companion, “Little Man”.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2024, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.
