Two Sumter County men have been arrested following a civil dispute between two families Sunday night that left one man airlifted to an Augusta, Georgia, hospital and a woman with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Investigators believe the dispute started in one location and escalated  into a fight that left a woman allegedly assaulted  and a male allegedly hit and dragged by a 1993 Chevrolet Silverado about 30 feet in a parking area near the intersection of U.S. 15 and Nettles Road.

Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Braden Bunch said the male victim was conscious and breathing before he was airlifted to the hospital. His current health condition is unknown. The woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office, the S.C. Highway Patrol and the U.S. Forest Service responded to the call.

When authorities arrived, two men fled the scene into an open field but were later captured and detained for questioning.

Joseph Lloyd Henderson, Jr.,20, has been charged with attempted murder while Joseph Lloyd Henderson, 43, has been charged with simple assault. The men are father and son, and both were being held in Sumter-Lee Regional Detection Center Sunday night pending a bonding hearing.

Bunch said investigators believe the altercation stems from an ongoing dispute between the two families following a prior incident at another Sumter County location earlier in the day.

The investigation continues and additional charges and arrests are possible, he said.
