WILLIAM T. GREGORY III

William Thurlow "Bill" Gregory III, 81, husband of Barbara B. Gregory, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011.

Born Feb. 16, 1929, in Lancaster, he was a son of the late William Thurlow Jr. and Fredricka Cullum Gregory. He was a native South Carolinian. He graduated from Carlisle Military School in Bamberg and Furman University in 1950, where he served as president of Theta Chi Fraternity. He was president of Palmetto Dunes Development, the original developers who acquired and developed Palmetto Dunes on Hilton Head Island in 1968. He also developed Reflections Subdivision in Columbia and contracted with the owners to develop Stoney Point Golf Course and Subdivision on Lake Greenwood. In 1992, he contracted with the owners to develop Wyboo Plantation and Golf Course on 650 acres on Lake Marion. He retired in 2002 and lived in Wyboo Plantation.

Survivors besides his wife of 32 years include a son, William T. "Gregg" Gregory IV and his wife, Terri Jo, of Manning; a daughter, Debra Gregory Sims and husband, Jerry, of Columbia; a stepson, David Louis Ott of Charleston; a stepdaughter, Mary B. Ott Krell and husband, Astor M. Krell Jr., of Manning; nine grandchildren, Justin Sims, Courtney Sims, Payne Gregory, Phelps Gregory, Kim Krell Trout, Katie Krell, Joshua Ott, Zachary Ott and Hannah Ott; and three great-grandchildren, Nathan Ott, Noah Ott and Aiden Hamilton Trout.

A memorial service was held Friday, Jan. 29, 2011, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Steve Phillips officiating.

A Celebration of Life drop-in was held afterward at the William T. "Bill" Gregory Community Center at Wyboo Plantation.

ROBERT L. HENDERSON Sr.

COLUMBIA - Robert Lee Henderson Sr., 69, widower of Gwendolyn Ware Henderson, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at Providence Hospital, Columbia.

He was born June 1, 1941, in St. Augustine, Fla., a son of Elizabeth Kilpatrick Henderson and the late Oscar Lee Henderson. He was reared by his stepmother, the Rev. Bertha Henley Henderson Roberts. He was a graduate of Excelsior High School in St. Augustine. In his life he sought the need for a personal Savior and joined Shiloh Penecostal Holiness Church, Bronx, N.Y. He was employed with Ford Motors for 38 years.

Survivors are his stepmother, the Rev. Bertha H. Roberts of Bronx; one son, Robert Lee Henderson Jr. of Bronx; two daughters, Tylisa Sweat of Charlotte, N.C., and Tracy Henderson of Bronx; one sister, Brenda Lee Raggins of Greencove Spring, Fla.; one stepsister, Francine Roberts of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one stepbrother, Leonard Roberts of St. Petersburg; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were held Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at Hayes F. & LaNelle J. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning, with the Rev. Jerome McCray officiating. Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

The family received friends at the home of his cousin, Irish Durham, 3618 Mallett Road, Sugar Hill community, Manning.

GEORGE HICKMAN Sr.

George "Cooter" Hickman Sr., widower of Bertha Ford Hickman and son of the late Johnny and Vermell Davis Hickman, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

He is survived by 11 children, Georgia Mack, Anthony Hickman, George Hickman Jr., Carrie Williams, Robert Hickman, Mary Bell, David Hickman, Jessie Hickman, Virginia Hickman, James Hickman, and Harry Hickman; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
