SUMMERTON - Walter Leon "Blackie" Blackwelder, 89, husband of Frances Godley Blackwelder, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Oct. 26, 1920, in Charlotte, N.C., he was a son of the late Roger Wardsworth and Mary Jane Earnhardt Blackwelder. He was a retired supervisor from Western Electric; a World War II U.S. Army staff sergeant, 80th General Hospital in New Guinea and the Philippines; secretary of the Charleston Breakfast Exchange Club; member of Woodmen of the World; charter member of the National World War II Museum in New Orleans; and a member of Summerton Presbyterian Church.

Survivors besides his wife of Summerton include a daughter, Nancy Blackwelder Evans of Summerton; and a grandson, Dr. Scott C. Evans and his wife, Dr. Elizabeth N. Dacus, of Charleston.

Graveside services were held Thursday at Adnah United Methodist Church cemetery in Islandton with the Rev. Garland Hart officiating.

The family received friends at the cemetery following services.
