A vehicle engulfed in flames in the McDonald’s drive thru at the corner of Broad Street and Patriot Parkway near Shaw Air Force Base late Saturday.
The Sumter Fire Department were called to the blaze at 9:41 p.m. for a commercial fire at the fast-food restaurant, but it changed to a vehicle fire once they arrived.
“It was a car fire,” said Division Chief Joey Duggan. “The car was apparently in the drive thru… I guess it placed an order and then went and caught fire. It originally came in that it was threatening McDonald’s, but it wound up being far enough away that it didn’t.”
The vehicle, a 2007 Saab that was fully involved, was pulled away from the building so that no damage was caused to the McDonald’s, Duggan said. There was about $2,500 worth of damage caused to the vehicle.
According to Duggan, the cause of the fire is undetermined, but it’s possible that it was a mechanical issue from the vehicle.
No injuries were reported.
