Gov. Henry McMaster rescinded part of his nonessential business mandates that have kept certain storefronts closed to the public because of the new coronavirus pandemic, allowing those certain businesses to reopen.

During the shutdown, retail stores were only allowed to sell products online for curbside pickup or delivery. Now, they can have the public peruse their stores, allowing in either 20% of their maximum occupancy or five people per 1,000 square feet, whichever is less, at a time.

All businesses should also maintain social distancing practices for its customers by not allowing them to congregate within six feet of each other except for those in the same family.

These are the stores allowed to reopen, effective Monday, April 20 at 5 p.m.:

  • Furniture and home-furnishing stores
  • Clothing, shoe and clothing accessory stores
  • Jewelry, luggage and leather goods stores
  • Department stores, except hardware and home-improvement stores, which been allowed to remain open the whole time
  • Sporting goods stores
  • Book, craft and music stores
  • Flea markets
  • Florists and flower stores

Stores such as hair and nail salons, tattoo and massage parlors and other close-contact services or venues such as gyms and fitness offerings that involve shared equipment, must remain closed.

Previously deemed essential businesses such as grocery stores, pharmacies, home improvement stores and businesses that sell firearms, have been allowed to remain open through the pandemic, though social distancing rules are in place there, too.
