Suspect dead in Lee County after 2 officer-involved shootings, investigation continues into both

Lee County officer-involved shooting is 33rd in state in 2024

Horry County Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Lee County on Friday morning that left the suspect dead.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents responded to Lee County as part of a multi-agency search for an armed and dangerous suspect, 27-year-old Alston Modlin, wanted in connection to an officer-involved shooting in McBee, in Chesterfield County, on Thursday, Sept. 19.

McBee is about 21.3 miles north of Bishopville and 45.1 miles north of Sumter. 

According to SLED, Modlin was wanted after shooting the McBee police officer during a traffic stop. The officer is at the hospital receiving treatment.

After last being spotted in Florence County at about 6 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, Modlin was located in Lee County by the sheriff’s office at about 10 a.m. and a shooting incident occurred, according to Mikayla Moskov, director of public information for Horry County Police Department.

Lee County Coroner Larry Logan confirmed Modlin is dead.

Horry County Police Department requested assistance from SLED in collaboration with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Lee County Sheriff’s Office. No additional information is available at this time.

An investigation is ongoing into both officer-involved shootings.

According to Moskov, the incident in Lee County was the 33rd officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2024.
