A Sumter man has been arrested in connection to the shooting death of a man in a gas station parking lot Friday.

Rashad Montrell Harvin turned himself in and is being held at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, according to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the Sumter Police Department.

The 29-year-old, of King Street, is facing a murder charge.

Reports indicate Michael Rochelle Wilson, 48, of Tullah Drive, was walking out of the A&P Coastal Mart on Boulevard Road after 5 p.m. when he was approached in the parking. According to the police department, the suspect fired a handgun at Wilson and then fled during an exchange of gunfire with the victim.

Wilson later died at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.

McGirt said tips from the public helped identify the suspect and that Harvin turned himself in without incident.

Detectives are working to determine a motive for the shooting.

Wilson’s family was notified by the Sumter County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
