A local woman celebrated her 100th birthday in April as well as the legacy of love her life has been filled with.
Elizabeth Burns, of Sumter, celebrated her 100th birthday on Wednesday, April 23, surrounded by family and friends.
The wife of the late Charles H. Burns, one of Sumter's first African American police officers, she is the mother to Elvera Maria Burns and the late Charles M. Burns (Sallie C. Burns, daughter-in-law), a grandmother to four, great-grandmother to six and a great-great-grandmother to seven.
The century of life and love was celebrated at Emmanuel UM Church, Burns' home church for the past 75 years.
Her daughter, Elvera, expressed she is "loved and revered by many friends and acquaintances."
