Sumter United Ministries opens Christmas assistance; application dates announced

Sumter United Ministries is looking to make Christmas a little brighter this year for all who are interested.

Help An Angel Fly is an annual Christmas assistance project utilized by The Crisis Relief Ministry during the year to identify clients that churches, Bible study groups, businesses, individuals and clubs can adopt and buy gifts for at Christmas.

However, some big changes are in store for this holiday season.

For the first time, anyone in the community can apply for help at Christmas. The ministry will still filter the applications based on need with their focus targeting working families with children ages 12 and under, seniors ages 65 and above and disabled persons who receive a disability income.

This is not a first-come, first-served project, and every applicant will have an equal opportunity to be selected regardless of the date of the application, the ministry said.

To apply, you must have a valid South Carolina ID and one account or bill notice matching the address on your ID.

Applications are done in person. Anyone interested can visit Sumter United Ministries at 36 Artillery Drive on the following days: Friday, Sept. 30, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.; Friday, Oct. 7, from 1-4 p.m.; and Monday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Anyone interested in sponsoring a family can call the ministry at (803) 775-0757 or email specialproject@sumterunitedministries.org to be connected with a Help an Angel Fly volunteer coordinator.
