After a request went out from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office for help in funding a bulletproof vest for a new K-9, the community responded quickly.

Within 15 hours, nearly $4,000 dollars were raised for a Kevlar vest for K-9 Kilo.

Kilo is a new member of the sheriff’s office’s K-9 unit, and his handler named him after the call sign for Corporal Andrew Gillette, the deputy who was killed in the line of duty last year. The nonprofit that raises fund for Kevlar vests for K-9s said each costs about $2,600, so the remaining funds will help the next agency looking to purchase one.
