Tucked away on Peach Orchard Road is one of the six federally funded research and development centers (FFRDC's) operated by the MITRE corporation. According to mitre.org, "MITRE has consistently addressed the most complex whole-of-nation challenges that threaten our country’s safety, security, and prosperity." In facing one of these challenges, the FFRDC in Sumter invited the USC Sumter esports team to compete in their new game Drone Guardians. Teams face off in domestic scenarios like drone threats against stadiums or defense of a forward operating base.

Sumter Today is presented by the University of South Carolina Sumter and Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.
