Sumter Today: Three area track and field athletes took home state titles on Friday and Saturday.

Sumter High School junior Alicia Spann won the state championship in 5A discus on Saturday at Spring Valley High’s Harry Parone Stadium.
Spann won with a throw of 118 feet, 6 inches.
Her winning throw came on the fifth of six throws, and it was 4 feet better than her second best throw.
Spann came into the event as the fourth seed following last weekend’s state qualifier.

Also on the winner’s stand this weekend was Manning High School freshman Ja’Lencia Griffin.
Griffin won both the 100 and 200 meter dashes in the 3A girls state track and field meet on Friday at Lower Richland High School.
She won the 200 in a time of 25.14 seconds, ahead of the second-place time of 25.41.
Griffin’s win in the 100 came with a time of 12.33, ahead of the next best time of 12.42.

Also in Clarendon County, Desane Washington of Scott’s Branch High School won the long jump in the 1B boys state track and field meet on Saturday at Lower Richland High.
Washington won the event with a jump of 21 feet, 5 inches, ahead of the second place jump of 20, 7.
Washington finished third in two other events, the 100 and 200 meter dashes.
