Sumter Today: The History of Activism in Sumter, James T. McCain, Sr.

Posted
"Southern Justice, Then and Now" was a panel led discussion at the Sumter County Gallery of Art. The focal point was Norman Rockwell's piece "Murder in Mississippi", which depicts three students (James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner) lost to the violence of the early 1960's. James T. McCain, Sr., father of Sumter's own Chairman Jim McCain, was a leader of CORE (Congress of Racial Equality), the organization the boys were members of. It was a conversation of insight into a piece and person in Sumter's history that should never be forgotten.
