Sumter Today: The Army celebrates its birthday

U.S Army Central is the Army leg of U.S. Central Command and higher headquarters to eight subordinate organizations.
Referred to as "Patton's Own," USARCENT has been on the front lines since 1918 and has direct lineage to Gen. George Patton and the campaign that changed the tides of World War II.
Soldiers stationed at ARCENT, which is housed on Shaw Air Force Base, celebrated the Army's 246th birthday on Monday with a theme of "Honoring the Courage of the American Soldier."
The event included music from an Army band, soldiers relaying stories of generational service, static displays and the ceremonial cake cutting.
