Sumter Today: A Sumter police officer helps older residents stay connected during the pandemic

Posted

Senior Corporal Warren Davis, more affectionally known as Papa G, runs a program at the Sumter Police Department called Project Checkmate.

He checks on about 40 participants via phone calls and house checks and even helps them with household tasks, such as getting the mail and simply keeping them company.

The participants of Project Checkmate are older Sumterites who live alone and don’t have a support system to help them throughout the week.

We’ve tagged along with Davis before, but he was recently recognized for his efforts by the state House of Representatives after Sumter Representative Murrell Smith wrote a resolution honoring him, so we caught back up with him to see how he has been adapting to COVID-19.
