Sumter Today: A church’s learning center gives kids a safe space to set up their virtual classroom

The M. H. Newton Family Enrichment Center has always been a mainstay in the community, and they realized their could fill a need when COVID-19 impacted the traditional school setting.
Sumter School District started its school year in an all-virtual capacity, and knowing many parents can’t work from home, Barney Gadson transformed the center’s after-school program into an all-day learning center. He wants more churches to open spaces for students, and we stopped by to learn more about his vision and what they’re offering their program participants.
