Sumter Today: Clarendon County community leaders remember the legacy of George Stinney Jr.

George Stinney Jr. became the youngest person in America to be sentenced to death and executed by law in 1944 after a speedy trial that found after 10 minutes of deliberation he killed two young girls in Clarendon County.

Years after his execution, George Frierson, a local historian and community activist worked to get his convicted overturned, for which he was successful.

The community gathered in Manning over the weekend to commemorate the young teen’s conviction being vacated, and we stopped by to learn more.
