Sumter Today: We learn how the police department is helping the senior community stay safe

This whole week has been National Police Week, and we're finishing the week off with a special look into the Sumter Police Department's Checkmate program. One officer is responsible for checking on more than 40 seniors who live independently but alone and don't have nearby family to rely on. He stops by once a week to help change lightbulbs and even takes them to doctors appointments, but the company he provides may be the most beneficial part of these friendships they've formed.
