Sumter Sheriff's Office request help identifying suspects in Mayesville attempted burglary

Sumter County Sheriff’s Office asks for your help in identifying two suspects in an apparent attempted burglary at a Mayesville-area convenience store last week.

Captured on surveillance cameras, two men are seen making multiple attempts to apparently gain access to a business in the 4500 block of Florence Highway using a chain and their truck to no avail.

Just after midnight Wednesday, the suspects first attached a chain to the front security doors of the building and hastily drive off in an attempt to pull the doors away, but the suspects had forgotten to attach the chain to their truck, as well.

The suspects are then seen in the video backing the truck up to the doors again and attaching the chain to the truck’s rear bumper, only for the chain to fall off the vehicle during the second attempt. At this time, the suspects remove the limp chain from the security doors and leave.

Apparently undaunted, the suspects return to the store about 15 minutes later, having apparently gone elsewhere to secure the chain to their truck.

Once they return, they again attach a chain to the metal security doors, which this time come off of the front of the building, knocking down a column supporting the roof above the gasoline pumps outside the business.

Having removed the security doors, the suspects then back the truck up again and reattach the chain in an effort to remove the building’s main doors. The truck accelerates quickly, but only manages to remove the handles to the doors, which remain closed. The suspects then depart, having failed to enter the building.

Investigators describe the first suspect as a male, possibly between the ages of 30 and 40 years old, standing between 5 foot 8 inches and 6 foot 1 inch tall. He was last seen wearing a dark blue hat, long sleeve gray shirt or sweater and black pants. The second suspect is described as a male between 5 foot 7 inches and 5 foot 11 inches tall, last seen wearing a dark blue hoodie and blue jeans. The truck is described as a late model, dark-colored, extended-cab pick-up truck, possibly a Dodge, with bed rails.

Anyone with any information regarding the incident is asked to call either the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office at (803) 436-2000, or Crime Stoppers at (803) 436-2718.
