Sumter police investigating after fatal shooting on South Lafayette Drive

Information on what led to shooting and those involved being sought

Nyqual Jamel Samuels, 19, of Sumter died Thursday from a gunshot wound to the abdomen according to Barron P. Hite, public information officer with Sumter Police Department.

Officers responded just after 2 p.m. Thursday to reports of a person being shot in the 500 block of South Lafayette Drive. Officers found Samuels who was airlifted to Prisma Health Richland where he later died. The family has been notified according to Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker, and an autopsy will be scheduled at MUSC in Charleston.
Detectives are trying to determine what led to the shooting and the individuals involved. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sumter Police Department at (803) 436-2700 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
