Sumter man attacked, robbed outside his business Monday

Sumter officers are investigating after a man was attacked and robbed at his Fort Street business Monday morning.
The 78-year-old business owner was outside of his used appliance store when he was approached by two men at about 9 a.m. Monday. The three were talking before he was struck from behind, said Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the Sumter Police Department. After regaining consciousness, the owner took shelter before an acquaintance found him and notified police.
The owner was taken to an area hospital, where he remains but is expected to recover.
According to McGirt, a wallet containing an undisclosed amount of cash was taken during the assault.
The Sumter Police Department is working to identify the robbers.
