Sumter man arrested in connection to break-ins of multiple storage units; sheriff's office seeks help identifying second suspect in video

A 54-year-old Sumter man has been arrested in connection to storage unit break-ins, and the Sumter County Sheriff's Office is seeking the public's help in identifying his alleged accomplice, according to the department's public information officer Mark Bordeaux.
The Sumter man was arrested on Monday, April 17, and charged with nine counts of third-degree burglary, according to a news release from SCSD.  Multiple warrants state that between March 22 and 23, the suspect, along with an unidentified accomplice, allegedly entered the Tri-Star Storage facility on Peach Orchard Road in Sumter and broke into six separate storage units, taking appliances, clothing, tools and other miscellaneous items.
The truck and trailer seen in the attached video were stopped by law enforcement on March 24.  The suspect was charged with numerous traffic violations at the time, and the vehicle was seized. A subsequent search warrant related to the man's residence led to the recovery of dozens of items related to this Tri-Star Storage incident.
The suspect was transported to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, where he is being held on a $45,000 surety bond.
Anyone with information about the second person in the video is asked to contact the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office at (803) 436-2000 or report it anonymously to CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIMESC. Anonymous tips that lead to an arrest qualify for a reward.
According to the sheriff's office, there has been a large increase of thefts from storage facilities in 2023. So far, there have been 14 reported incidents at various storage facilities in Sumter County. In most cases, thieves broke into multiple units in each incident. The public is encouraged to maintain a detailed list of contents, including serial numbers, of items in storage preferably with photographs. Also keep contact information with the storage company up to date.
