A 23-year-old Sumter man remains in critical condition after an armed robbery and shooting Tuesday night.

Sumter police officers responded to a call after 7:50 p.m. where they learned that Marquis Hicks, of Tudor Street, had been taken by private vehicle to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital for gunshot wounds, according to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the Sumter Police Department. He was later transferred to a Columbia hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

An initial investigation indicated a group of armed individuals entered the Tudor Street residence, shot Hicks and stole jewelry and other items belonging to a witness, whose identity is not being released, before they ran from the home. The incident is considered isolated, McGirt said.

Officers are still working to gather information that can help identify those involved.
