Sumter, Lee, Clarendon under severe thunderstorm warning with 70-mph gusts

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for central Sumter County, southeastern Lee County and northern Clarendon County until Monday, Sept. 17 at 7:15 p.m.

The National Weather Service’s warning says the storm is moving at 30 miles per hour with 70-mph wind gusts, a much stronger storm than what the area saw from the bulk of Hurricane Florence.

“Expect considerable tree damage. Damage is likely to mobile homes, roofs and outbuildings,” the advisory says.

Locations impacted include Sumter, South Sumter, Mulberry, Millwood, Turbeville, Mayesville, Pinewood, Lynchburg, Paxville, Cane Savannah, Lakewood, Privateer, East Sumter and Shiloh.

The Sumter Item has heard at least three 911 calls about lightning striking homes since the storm started. The severity of the incidents is not yet known.
