Sumter deputies arrest man in connection to armed robbery

A Winnsboro man, wanted in several other jurisdictions, was arrested in connection to an armed robbery in Sumter on Thursday night.

At about 9:27 p.m. on Jan. 29, deputies responded to a call of an armed robbery at a store along Camden Highway. As deputies investigated the scene, additional deputies began for searching for the suspect's vehicle. 

A deputy received confirmation on a vehicle's description and license tag that matched that of a suspect and conducted a traffic stop on Houck Street, according to Mark Bordeaux, public information officer for Sumter County Sheriff's Office.

With assistance from Sumter Police Department and at after finding evidence connecting the driver to the robbery, John Demont Mickens, 36, of Winnsboro, was arrested and charged with armed robbery, pointing and presenting a firearm and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to Bordeaux. 

Mickens was taken to Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center where he remains awaiting bond.
