Sumter County seeing light but steady turnout for presidential primary

Posted

Voter turnout has been light but steady for the first half of the day in Sumter County, according to election officials.

Precincts were all up and running by 7:05 a.m., said Pat Jefferson, director of Sumter County Voter Registration and Elections. She said she has not heard of any mishaps or machine issues.

This Democratic presidential primary is the first countywide election to use new paper-based voting machines. Poll workers can help voters who have questions about how to use them.

Any of the county’s 69,767 active registered voters can cast a ballot for one of the seven Democrats vying for their party’s presidential nomination. You do not have to declare a party in South Carolina but can only vote in one party’s presidential primary. There is no Republican primary.

Anyone in line by 7 p.m. has the right to vote.

Results will be posted online at TheItem.com as they come in Saturday night.
