Art and advocacy met last Wednesday, April 9, as Sumter Behavioral Health Services partnered with Mrs. McQuilla's fourth-grade class at Cherryvale Elementary School to launch a month-long poster contest focused on substance abuse prevention.
According to Prevention Director Trevor Brown, trends of alcohol, vaping and drug use are beginning as early as elementary school. This initiative aimed to offer the knowledge needed to brainstorm, share ideas and produce six bold posters - each one with a message of resisting tobacco, alcohol and drug companies that target youth.
To reward their passion and teamwork, Demara's Italian Restaurant treated the class to a well-deserved pizza party, celebrating these young voices for taking a stand.
