The South Carolina Air and Space Forces Association recently presented awards to the annual state competition award winners between our Air Force bases in South Carolina.

This competition involves the competing bases (Shaw Air Force Base, Joint Base Charleston and Joint National Guard Base McEntire) to submit nominees for five award categories: Best Aviator, Best Aircraft Technician, Best Logistician, Best Mission Support Person and Outstanding Unit.

Shaw did extremely well in the competition with Capt. Claire Randolph as the Best Aviator, Senior Airman Keion McLeod-Harris as the Best Aircraft Technician, Steven Fadden as the Best Logistician, and the 20th Component Maintenance Squadron as the Outstanding Unit. The local chapter president, retired Col. Bush Hanson, presented the recipients their awards at each of the units during the past several weeks. Additionally, AFA's national award for the best crew chief in the Air Force for 2022 was presented to Technical Sgt. Michael Orlando of the 77th Fighter Generation Squadron.

The chapter's teacher of the year, Misty Roberson, Hillcrest Middle School, was also recognized as the South Carolina AFA Teacher of the Year and will compete for AFA's national award. The chapter was also recognized as the best chapter in the state.
