SAM HALLEY

Sam Halley was born on June 15, 1949, in Rembert, a son of the late Nell Allen Halley and Leo Halley Sr. He departed this life on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022, at his home in Sumter, where he had been living with his sister.

Sam's early Christian education began at Pine Grove AME Church in Rembert. Later in his life he united with Macedonia Baptist Church of Camden, where he faithfully attended, until his health began to fail. Sam was educated in the public schools of South Carolina. After a flourishing career at Kendal Mill in Camden, he retired on disability in 2007. He occasionally did farm work and worked on equipment. Sam's love of anything mechanical was well known and his proliferation of tools certainly established that (and contributed to his successful career). Gadgets were throughout his apartment - he carried around a device clipped to his clothes to turn on lights throughout his apartment. Family and friends knew of Sam's love of cars and speed, consequently his many trips to various racetracks. Another pastime of Sam's was wrestling … watching it on TV or in person, and, of course, cowboy TV shows and movies were a close second to wrestling.

Sam leaves to cherish his memory: one son, Antonio Halley of Rembert; two daughters, Tisha Halley of Rembert and Jennifer Salmond of Camden; three sisters, Frances (Simon) Bolden of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Dorothy Halley of Rembert and Ruth (Dele) Omonijo of Sumter; one brother, Lawrence Halley of Lugoff; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one aunt, Almeta Jenkins (Sammy); one sister-in-law, Willene Halley; a special niece, Beverly Rimer; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitations at 305 Kendal Ave., Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter, with the Rev. Lorenzo Dinkins, pastor of Pine Grove AME Church, Rembert, officiating, eulogist.

The procession will leave the home at 10:30 a.m.

Burial will follow in Sandhill Cemetery, Rembert.
