Letter to the editor: Penny for Progress will continue the momentum Sumter has built

Posted

As a young professional, a mother, a proud native of Sumter and the interim president/CEO of the Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce, I am writing to express my strong endorsement of the Penny for Progress initiative. This initiative is an investment in the future of Sumter, providing a pathway for continued growth and improvement across our community. I urge my fellow citizens to support it.

The Penny for Progress initiative is more than just a tax; it's a means to ensure the long-term prosperity of our community. By directing one cent of every dollar spent toward essential projects, this initiative will stimulate economic development, support our local businesses and strengthen the foundation of our community. As we continue to attract new businesses and foster entrepreneurship, investing in infrastructure and public amenities is crucial for maintaining a competitive edge. The improvements funded by Penny for Progress will help make Sumter an even more attractive place for businesses to grow and thrive.

Our community's success is also tied to Shaw Air Force Base, a vital component of our local economy and a source of pride for Sumter. The base not only provides significant employment opportunities, but also brings a unique set of needs that the Penny for Progress initiative will help meet. Supporting infrastructure and community services enhances the quality of life for service members and their families, demonstrating our commitment to those who serve.

Education remains a crucial element of our community's future, and while Penny for Progress does not fund every educational facility, it does support key projects that benefit Sumter's students and families. By focusing on specific improvements, such as upgraded infrastructure and safer public spaces, the initiative will enhance the overall environment for our children. These investments help create a stronger community foundation where students can thrive, which in turn supports a more skilled and prepared future workforce. Strengthening these targeted areas will ensure Sumter's youth have opportunities to succeed in an ever-changing economy.

As a Sumter native, I have seen firsthand the progress our community has made over the years. The Penny for Progress initiative will continue to build on this momentum, addressing the needs of our citizens and positioning Sumter for a prosperous future. I encourage everyone to learn more by visiting PennyforProgress.com and to vote in favor of this important initiative.

Together, we can keep Sumter moving forward.
