Letter to the editor: Penny for Progress can make Sumter stronger, safer

Posted

As a 25-year-long member of the Sumter community, a mother, wife and former chair of the Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, I've witnessed firsthand the power of community-driven progress. It's not just about the projects we build - it's about the vision we share for the future. The Penny for Progress campaign embodies this vision, aiming to make Sumter stronger, safer and more vibrant.

In past campaigns, Penny for Progress has successfully tackled projects that touch our daily lives. From modernizing infrastructure and enhancing public spaces to improving safety and expanding recreational opportunities, the positive changes are evident. This isn't simply about putting a bandage on problems; it's about investing in sustainable solutions that benefit everyone.

The beauty of Penny for Progress is that it's a fair way to fund improvements. By adding just a penny on every dollar spent, the financial burden is spread widely, with visitors to Sumter helping fund our progress, too. It allows us to make necessary improvements without significantly increasing the financial load on local property owners.

This is more than just a campaign - it's our opportunity to continue shaping a thriving community for our children and grandchildren, along with also helping to support Shaw Air Force Base and its service members, who are so very important to our community. Let's keep Sumter moving forward with purpose. I encourage you to join me in supporting the Penny for Progress campaign. It's an investment in the quality of life we all want for our families and future generations.
