Joanna McClam Young, 79, died Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born June 1, 1931, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Laura Jones McClam.

At an early age, she received Christ and joined St. John United Methodist Church in Lynchburg and later moved to Sumter and became a member of St. James United Methodist Church.

Joann, affectionately known by family and friends, attended Clarendon and Sumter public schools. She then moved to Newark, N.J. While living in New Jersey, she was employed as a housekeeper for the Shapiro writers for ABC television. She later returned to Sumter and worked for the Campbell’s Soup Co. until she retired.

Survivors include two sisters, Ossie Mae Price of Sumter and Alberta Powell of Florence; a brother, Archie (Rebecca) McClam of Baltimore; nieces, nephews; a special grandnephew, Brandon, whom she called her little angel boy, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Joanna was preceded in death by her husband, Adam Young; two sisters, Hazel Cooper and Kathlene Ray; and two brothers, Elmore and Coel McClam.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 14, 2011, at St. James United Methodist Church with the pastor, the Rev. Cathy Mitchell, officiating. Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Cemetery.

The family received friends at the home of her sister, Ossie Price, 76 McCormick Drive, Sumter.
