Noah Irby Cockerill Jr., 83, husband of Dorothy Marie Thames Cockerill, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, at his home.

Born Sept. 2, 1927, in the Silver community of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Noah Irby Cockerill Sr. and the late Retha Mae Hodge Cockerill. He was a retired glass blower, a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, and a church member of Unity Baptist Fellowship.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of Sumter, are two sons, Glenn Allison Cockerill and his wife, Tanaporn "Lynn," of Sumter, Gerald Wayne Cockerill and his wife, Helen, of Goldsboro, N.C.; three daughters, Patricia Diane Geddings and her husband, Mikey, of Sumter, Janie Louise Pye and her husband, Tommy, of Columbia, Eadie Marie McKenzie and her husband, Harry, of Kingstree; a brother, William M. Cockerill of Sumter; two sisters, Susie Mae Scurry and Margaret Cockerill, both of Sumter; 12 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. He is also survived by his "second" family, the staff and customers of the Sportsman Stop 'N' Shop.

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home, 515 Miller Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Pete Mixon and the Rev. Jimmy Atkerson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park in Sumter.

Michael Geddings, Tommy Norman, Ricky Kolb, Jeffrey Thames, Eric Brown, Jimmy Giles and Woody Scurry served as pallbearers.

The family received friends at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home, Sumter.

JOE H. DIXON Jr.

Joe Harry Dixon Jr., 47, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was born April 16, 1963, in Clarendon County, a son of Willie Lee Dixon Holland and the late Joe Harry Dixon Sr. Joe graduated from Scott's Branch High School in 1981. At an early age, he joined St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Pinewood. Joe was last employed with Sumter County Corrections and IGA, both in Sumter.

Joe was preceded in death by one brother, Matthew Dixon; grandmothers, Mamie R. Black and Alice Dixon; and grandfather, Harry Dixon.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Dixon of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sons, Joe Dixon IV and Anthony Owens, both of Brooklyn; daughter, Felicia Dixon; mother, Willie Lee (James) Holland; brothers, Curtis Dixon of Columbia and Derrick Miller of Brooklyn; sister, Rhonda Miller of Brooklyn; grandchildren, Shanya Owens and Telayia Owens of Brooklyn; special friend, Deborah McLendon of Sumter; mother-in-law, Tommie Lee Frazier; grandfather, Willie Thomas Black; uncles and aunts, Thomas (Virginia) Black, Margoey "Albert" (Carolyn) Black, Ruby Dixon, Lorraine "Annie" Dixon, Maxine (Leroy) Hampton, Alicestine Dow, Cathleen Bennett, Evangelist Della (Herbert) Lee, Allean (James) Sanders, James (Dorothy) Black, Henry Jackson, Jarrett Jackson, Acie (Lottie Mae) Riley, Mary Jackson, Hattie Mae Servance, Mary (John) Johnson, Carrie Lee Oliver, Gloria Riley, Marian Black, Ruby Richburg, Anthony Oliver, Grady (Dorothy) Dixon, Albert (Frances) Dixon and Jessie (Frances) Dixon; niece, Kenyell; and several other relatives and dear friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010, at St. Mark AME Church, Summerton. Burial followed at St. John Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.
