Work commuters on Wednesday morning may have noticed a school bus on its side in a ditch near a wooded area off U.S. 521 near Dalzell, but no one was injured in the incident, and no students were on board at the time.

About 7:45 a.m., a Sumter School District bus driver on U.S. 521 South pulled over to the side of the road due to mechanical issues, according to a district spokeswoman, and subsequently slid into the ditch because of the wet and soft ground.

The bus driver was able to exit the bus with no injuries, said Shelly Galloway, the district's executive director of Communication and Community Engagement.

After a wrecker and other emergency officials arrived on the scene, the bus was pulled out of the ditch at 9:50 a.m. and taken to the Sumter Bus Shop for repairs, she said.

The incident was near the Frierson Road intersection on U.S. 521.
