Nellie Jocelyn Dubose, 79, former wife of Thomas H. Budden Sr., died Monday, May 10, 2010, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in the Sandhills community of Sumter County, she was the fifth of 17 children born to the late Gilbert and Eliza L. Pleasant Dubose. Raised in the Zion Hill AME Church, she later became an active member of Enon Missionary Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities including the usher board, as a Sunday school teacher and in the choir. In the 1990s, she joined and became a faithful member of the Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. Educated in the public schools of Pinewood, Mrs. Dubose was first employed for more than 20 years at Campbell Soup Co. She was also employed as a mentor and caretaker for the Department of Social Services foster care system. Mrs. Dubose was active in her community, where she served as clerk for the Pinedale Community Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Juanita Budden; and her brothers, Gilbert, David, William James, Albert, Samuel and Alonzo Dubose.

Surviving are three daughters, Loretta B. and her husband, Lawrence Lehrman, of Chicago, Ill., Julia A. Budden of Sumter and Nellie T. and her husband, Dr. Robert Hanowell, of Atlanta; four sons, Thomas H. Budden Jr., Larry D. and his wife, Roberta Budden, of Sumter, Lester E. and his wife, Jeannie Budden, of Eastover, and Gilbert and his wife, Bridgette Henderson, of Fort Hood, Texas; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; seven sisters, Julie H. Pleasant and Margaret C. (James) Wright of Pinewood, Dorcas (Nelson) Ridgeill of Manning, Caroline (Hazel) Budden and Rosa Henderson of Sumter, Susan E. Brown of New York and Frances Eliza Boston of Newport News, Va.; five brothers, Arthur Hope, Henry Dubose, Matthew P. Dubose, Moses (Barbara) Dubose and John Henry (Netalie) Dubose; and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 15, 2010, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the senior pastor, the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, officiating. Burial followed in Manning Cemetery in Pinewood.

The family received friends Friday, May 14, 2010, at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 S. Main St., Sumter, and at other times, 72 Albert Spears Drive, Sumter.
