Museum to hold reception for new exhibit, Glimpses Into the Past: Postcards of Sumter
In celebration of the newly painted Greetings from Sumter County Museum mural, the museum has installed a new exhibit, Glimpses Into the Past: Postcards of Sumter, highlighting more than 50 postcards from the museum collection. Included are images of Main Street, city landmarks, schools, houses of worship, restaurants, hotels, businesses, etc.
The museum will hold a free drop-in and viewing of the new exhibit from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in McKenzie Hall, 122 N. Washington St.
Also being celebrated is the museum's new mural painted by artist Christopher Johnson as part of the Creative Canvas Project sponsored by the Sumter County Cultural Commission. The recently unveiled mural, on the side wall of the museum's Heritage Education Center, is designed to mimic an old postcard with the words "Greetings from Sumter County Museum" featuring components of museum buildings and exhibit subjects. A brochure is available to the public to learn more about the mural and the images displayed on it.
The museum has selected a variety of postcards to reprint and enlarge for better viewing but will also feature actual postcards, some of which have been mailed to and/or from Sumter residents. The exhibit will remain on display throughout the remainder of the year, allowing staff to rotate the postcards on display.
Also included is a "Create Your Own Postcard of Sumter County" interactive station. Visitors are asked to design a postcard highlighting a significant or memorable landmark or feature of the county. The museum will post some of these for display.
Glimpses Into the Past: Postcards of Sumter will also include an interactive online component making these postcard images accessible to all. Visit www.sumterpostcards.com to view some of the museum's collection.
