Morant sets rookie record against Rockets

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Former Crestwood High School and current Memphis Grizzlies standout Ja Morant set a rookie record during the Grizzlies' 121-110 victory over Houston on Tuesday.

Morant had 26 points and eight assists for Memphis, which won its sixth straight game. Morant missed only one of his 11 shots, becoming the first rookie in NBA history to score at least 25 points while handing out eight or more assists and shooting 90% or better from the field.

Clemson's Higgins entering draft

CLEMSON - Clemson's leader in receiving yards and touchdowns, Tee Higgins, is forgoing his final college season to enter the NFL draft.

Higgins is a 6-foot-4-inch, 215-pound wide receiver from Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He had 1,167 yards on 59 catches with 13 touchdowns as the Tigers (14-1) won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship.

The Tigers' 29-game winning streak came to end on Monday with a 42-25 loss to LSU in the national championship game.

Higgins had a career-record 27 touchdown catches in three seasons with the Tigers.

Higgins thanked his family, his coaches, teammates and Clemson fans for their support in his social media post on Wednesday. He said it has always been his dream to play in the NFL and support his family.

"Because of Clemson, I now have the opportunity to do that" by moving on to the NFL, he said.

Higgins is projected as a late first-round pick in April's draft.

FLORENCE - Laurence Manning Academy's varsity girls basketball team fell to 1-1 in SCISA Region III-3A with a 68-45 loss to Florence Christian on Tuesday at the FCS gymnasium.

Katherine Burns led the Lady Swampcats, 7-6 overall, with 16 points. Bryce Erickson added 12.

COLUMBIA - Wilson Hall's B girls basketball team defeated Hammond 24-10 on Tuesday at the Hammond gymnasium.

Emma Howle led the 8-2 Lady Barons with seven points. Olivia Beasley added five.

COLUMBIA - Laurence Manning Academy's B girls basketball team improved to 4-1 with a 36-13 win over Heathwood Hall on Thursday at the HH gymnasium.

Karly Bjork led LMA with 13 points. Audrey Coker and Hailey Truett both had six.

On Wednesday in Orangeburg, LMA lost to Orangeburg Prep 20-13. Bjork led the way with five points.
