Funeral services for Mary Eliza English will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Asbury United Methodist Church, 355 Pudding Swamp Road, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Shirley McKnight officiating. Interment will follow at Florence National Cemetery, 803 E. National Cemetery Road, Florence.

The public may view from 1 to 7 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 S. Main St., Sumter.

Mrs. English will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Friday for further viewing until the hour of service.

Mary Eliza English transitioned on Friday, Sept. 13, 2019, at her eldest daughter's home in Riverdale, Georgia.

Born in Shiloh, Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Mana O. Goodman and the wife of the late George English. Mary "Boot" Eliza Goodman English was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Johnson High School in Lynchburg. Mary welcomed Christ as her personal savior at an early age and joined Asbury United Methodist Church. She served faithfully as a lifelong member of the choir and many other auxiliaries. She was employed as a seamstress for more than 37 years, until her retirement in early 2000. "Ms. Boot" was a loving and caring person who captured the hearts of seemingly everyone she met.

In addition to her mother and husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Eva Bell Goodman.

Survivors include a loving sister, Mable R. English of Lynchburg; four children, Laverne (Patricia) English of Santee, Georjean (David) Simmons of Riverdale, Cynthia (Lynn) Washington of St. Augustine, Florida, and Ronny (Jannette) English of Sumter; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one step-grandchild; one step-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
