MARIE MILLER MAJOR

Marie Lorraine Miller Major was born on June 2, 1939, in Camden. After a short illness, she left this earthly home on Monday, Jan. 11, 2021.

Marie was the only child of the late Irene Miller and the adopted daughter of the late Martha Ann Walker. Her education began at Jackson Elementary School. She transferred to Mather Academy, where she graduated from in May 1956. She attended South Carolina State College from 1956 to 1958. In 1958, she married the love of her life, the late Dr. Lawrence Major Jr. She completed her education at CUNY York College, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education and at CUNY - Queens College, where she earned her Master of Arts Degree in Education. Marie worked in the New York City public schools as an elementary teacher from 1986 to 1999.

Left to celebrate her memories are her daughters, Carmen of North Carolina and Rosemarie (Leon) of New York; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her brother, James Walker; her brother-in-law; two sisters-in-law; a goddaughter, Carmen Taylor; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, sorors and friends.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Lawrence Major Jr.; and her son, Lawrence Major III.

She was a member of Rafting Creek Baptist Church, where she was a member of the usher and missionary boards. Marie was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Abundant Life Church, 804 Laurens St., Camden, with Dr. Aurelio D. Givens officiating.

The procession will leave at 1:20 p.m. from the home, 403 Cool Springs Drive, Camden.

Burial will be at a later date in New York.
