Manning man arrested in connection to shooting death

MANNING – A 22-year-old Manning man was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound early Friday morning, and an arrest was made in connection with the death a short time later.  

“Javon Smith, 22, died between 3:30 a.m. and 4 a.m.,” said Clarendon County Coroner Bucky Mock. “An autopsy has been scheduled for Sunday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.”

Clarendon County Sheriff Tim Baxley said that Jeffery Weeks, 36, of Manning, was arrested and charged with murder Friday morning in connection with the younger man’s death.

“The Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office along with officers from the Manning Police Department responded to 1275 High Hills Lane,” Baxley said. “Upon arrival, officers found the victim, 22-year-old Javon L. Smith of Manning.”

According to Baxley, Smith was found with an “apparent gunshot wound to the chest.”

The shooting occurred in a small residential community about one mile east of Manning off the Bloomville Road.
