Maebell Cantey Hammett, 87, widow of Willie Hammett, died Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 16, 1923, in the Live Oak section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Lavalle and Ella Tindal Cantey. She was a faithful member of the missionary and usher board at Trinity AME Church and attended Clarendon County public schools.

Survivors include a son, Charles (Barbara) Cantey of Philadelphia, Pa.; a brother, Wayman Cantey of the home; a sister, Rita White of Sumter; a niece and caregiver, Ida Cantey of the home; and four grandchildren, Cherly (Paul) Chalmus of Baltimore, Md., Charles Cantey Jr., Eric Cantey and Gemrice Cantey, all of Philadelphia.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough, pastor, officiating. Burial was held in Manning Cemetery.

The family received homes at the home, 1036 S. Main St., Sumter.
