LILA JUNE TAYLOR BAILEY

A memorial service for Lila Taylor Bailey will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Neal Sweet officiating. The family will receive friends following the service and other times at the home.

Lila Bailey was born on Aug. 15, 1942, in Burnsville, North Carolina, to the late Andy Calvin "Bill" Taylor and Nell Brinkley Taylor Fortner. Mrs. Bailey was raised by her stepfather, Arnold Fortner, after the death of her father. She attended school in Yancey County, North Carolina. She was married to John Burns Bailey in June of 1961 and moved to Sumter in March of 1967. Shortly thereafter, she started work with Sumter School District 2 and worked there for 33 years. She also worked for BI-LO grocery store in Sumter for 32 years.

Lila is survived by two daughters, Nancy Cook (David) of Sumter and Penny Cook (Patrick) of Dayton, Ohio; three sons, John Erskine Bailey (Amanda), David Bailey (Lisa) and Darryl Bailey (Kathryn), all of Sumter; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her best friend that she loved as a sister, Virginia Rewis of Sumter; sister-in-law, Janet Fortner of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Sylvia Fortner of Spruce Pine, North Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many loving friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Larry Fortner and Wade Fortner.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in the mountains of North Carolina at Price Honeycutt Cemetery.
