Letter to the editor: There's a lot to love about climate change solutions

Posted

A new report released this week by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns we're not reducing climate pollution fast enough.

Like many Americans, I have observed the increase in extreme weather incidents exacerbated by the heat-trapping gasses we release into the atmosphere. Climate disasters cost $115 billion in insured losses in 2022.

Thankfully the Inflation Reduction Act, the most significant U.S. effort in solving climate change that passed last year, ensures that folks in Sumter can reap rewards as we work quickly to cut carbon pollution.

South Carolina residents are now eligible to save thousands of dollars when purchasing electric cars, induction stoves and energy-efficient appliances that will reduce household bills and improve air quality. Families that take advantage of clean energy and electric vehicle tax credits are set to save more than $1,000 per year.

It is natural to be alarmed by climate change - and even avoid it as a topic of conversation - but the IRA has shown us how federal legislation can tackle the warming and help everyday South Carolinians. I urge Rep. Ralph Norman to support other federal bills that tackle this problem, such as the RISEE and Forest Acts.
