Letter to the editor: Decision to remove post office and bill pay office from Piggly Wiggly is unthinkable

Posted

I wish to call to your attention to a serious problem.

Piggly Wiggly is going to kick out the post office and pay bills office at the end of the month. They want that space to sell beer.

This decision is unthinkable. They are removing two essential services that provide necessary and needed services. They serve an estimated 1,000 people per month.

People can buy beer at hundreds of places all over Sumter and Sumter County. Piggly Wiggly does not have a legitimate reason to sell beer. If there is to be open cans or bottles or drinking. That should require a special license which pray cannot be given to them. I suspect that there is some big money involved in this deal.

The loss of the post office and the pay bills office will be a great inconvenience to the people of Sumter. I go to the post office every day to mail letters or to mail a package.

Sir, I hope you will investigate this matter. And I hope you will prevent the loss of the post office and the bill paying office.

I feel it is a terrible decision by Piggly Wiggly. And they are trying to keep it quiet.

If possible I hope there will be public hearings on this matter.
